Teen/Parent Extensive Program

Teenagers, parents and families sometimes need more help than a once a week therapy session.  Often, not only do adolescents need assistance in learning how to manage their emotions but parents struggle to know how to deal with their emotions when things spin out of control emotionally in the family.  Parents need support and their own skills to cope and effectively intervene.

Teenagers

......Being a teen (or a parent for that matter) in today's world is challenging, stressful, confusing and at times even depressing.  Adolescents face so many roadblocks to their successful journey into adulthood:  Social media, bullying (including Cyberbullying), drugs including marijuana and alcohol, puberty, blended families, grades, cyber addiction, pornography, peer pressure and more.  These can easily turn into anxiety, depression, and feelings of guilt or hopelessness.  It is difficult for parents to know what is "normal" teen struggles and what has turned into actual mental health or substance abuse problems.  Many teens (and parents) do not have the skills to manage these issues and the feelings around them.

......When weekly individual/family outpatient therapy is no longer working, Bobby Scott & Associates offers and Extensive Outpatient Program that is three - four hours a week for a minimum of eight weeks.

......There are four components to this more intensive treatment:

  • Adolescent DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) Skills Group:  Teens meet with a counselor in a group setting weekly on Thursday nights to learn DBT skills and how to apply them to their lives.  They learn how to regulate their emotions without anger, marijuana, drinking, self-harm and other unhealthy or destructive behaviors. (Thursdays 6:30 PM - 7:15 PM).

  • Parent DBT Group:  Parents meet with a therapist who helps them process their feelings and teaches them basic DBT and parenting skills.  They also learn how to hold their teen accountable while validating them for any positive use of DBT skills to maximize the teen's use of healthy coping skills. (Thursdays 6:30 PM -7:15 PM).

  • Multi-family Group:  Parents and teens come together for a group to further apply the above techniques.  Parents spend time validating their teens in the group.  (Thursdays 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM).

  • Individual/Family Private Therapy Session:  The individual meets with their own personal therapist weekly and with their parents as needed for family therapy to address their individual mental health needs as identified.  (Scheduled by appointment).
